My earlobes are the fussiest part of me. For years I could not wear earrings more than an hour without them going red and itchy, and after one bad run of cheap hoops from the drugstore I quit earrings altogether for about two years. I am not a jewelry person with a drawer full of options. I have one piercing in each ear and I intend to keep it that way. So when I started looking again, I wanted one pair I could put in and forget about. The first week of February I ordered the Gabry&jwl huggie hoops, the 10mm pair, and I have worn them almost every day since.

Nine months later, here is what I can tell you honestly. My lobes have not gone red once. That is the whole reason I am writing this list. What follows are ten reasons this particular pair has worked on ears like mine, with the places I would still tell you to keep your expectations level.

The one pair I stopped shopping around for

Hinged 316L surgical stainless steel hoops, sized from 6mm to 14mm. Nine months of daily wear on fussy lobes, and the little hinge is still the only thing I complain about.

The metal is 316L surgical stainless steel, not a plated mystery blend

The listing calls it 316L surgical stainless steel, and that is the sentence that made me try it. The stamp inside reads 14K, but the steel grade is the part I actually care about. Plated earrings are where my lobes always got into trouble, because the coat on the post wears thin and then your skin meets whatever sits underneath. Steel does not have a coat to wear through. I am not going to tell you steel is fine jewelry, because it is not, but it is the reason I was willing to put a pair back in my ears after two years of not bothering.

The hinge means there is no tiny back to drop on the tile

These are hinged sleepers. The hoop opens on a little hinge at the bottom, slips through the hole, and clicks shut. There is no separate butterfly back to lose at six in the morning. For ears like mine that is most of the battle, because the less I have to fiddle with the piercing, the calmer it stays. My one real complaint is that the hinge is fiddly with older fingers. Getting it lined up straight out of bed takes me two tries more often than I would like.

You can pick a size that sits close to the lobe instead of swinging under it

The hoop comes in 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm and 14mm, and that range matters more than it sounds. A hoop that hangs below the lobe swings when you turn your head, and swinging is what snags. I wear the 10mm, which sits close with almost no drop at all. If your lobes are small, the 6mm or 8mm does the same job tighter. If you want a little more presence, there is room to go up.

4

Nothing dangles, so nothing catches

There is no drop on these, which means there is nothing for the world to grab. My scarf in January, the seatbelt, the phone pressed to my ear, the towel when I dry my hair. Every dangle earring I ever owned found one of those. A hoop that hugs the head just does not have a lever hanging out. That sounds like a small thing until you have yelped at your own car door one too many times and finally given up on the pretty pair in the box.

5

The smaller sizes work for a second or third piercing too

The listing names lobes, cartilage and helix placements, and it offers the smaller sizes in the range. I only have one hole in each ear, so I cannot tell you from my own experience how the 6mm behaves up in cartilage. I can tell you the pair I wear sits flat against the lobe and does not press. If you have a second hole that has been sulking since your last pair, a small steel hoop is the sensible thing to try there first.

Finding out whether your ears tolerate them will not sting

I will not pretend this is fine jewelry, because it is not, and nobody in my house is pretending either. What it is, is a small enough thing to try that finding out will not hurt. Walt and I are on a retired budget and I bought this Gabry&jwl pair out of my own spending money. If my lobes had pitched a fit, I would have been out about what a nice lunch costs and no more. That felt like a fair trade to make in February.

Nine months of near daily wear and my lobes have stayed calm

February to now is nine months, and my lobes have not gone red once. I am careful with them. Earrings go on last, after lotion, hairspray and perfume, so none of that sits under the metal. They come off at bedtime and before a shower, a bath, or anything involving a bucket and a cleaner. A soft dry cloth after wearing. That is the entire routine. I am not going to call any metal hypoallergenic and promise you the world, because bodies are different. I can only tell you what my own ears did.

8

They go on and come off in one motion, which is why the habit stuck

Because they hinge, they come off in one motion and go back on in one motion. That is why I actually keep the routine. Jewelry I have to unhook and rehook at the sink gets left in. Jewelry that takes two seconds gets worn. All my pieces live in one lined tray in the top drawer of my dresser, each in its own compartment, and the hoops are the easiest of the five to put away properly. Convenience sounds lazy. It is really just how a habit survives.

9

They read as a plain small hoop, so you stop thinking about them

They look like a small hoop and nothing else, which is exactly what I wanted. I wear them to the church office on Wednesday mornings when I am filing and answering the phone, to the grocery store, to the bank, to the post office. Nobody has ever asked me what I have on my ears. They just look like I have ears and earrings, which is the whole point at my age. I do not want a conversation starter. I want to get through the day without thinking about my own head.

This is the pair I would buy again and hand to a friend with the same complaint

Nine months in, this is the pair I would buy again and the pair I would hand to a friend who told me she had given up on earrings. I would hand it over with the hinge complaint attached, because it is real and you should know it going in. The Gabry&jwl hoops are not fancy and they are not trying to be. They are a plain steel hoop that stays put, comes off easily and has not set my lobes off. That is a low bar and it took me years to clear it.

What I'd Skip

Things I would skip, and I say this as somebody who has wasted money on earrings before. I would skip the drugstore fashion hoops with a plated post, because that thin coat is exactly what my lobes react to. I would skip anything that dangles past the jaw, no matter how pretty, if your ears are the sensitive part. I looked at sterling silver hoops at a department store counter and they were lovely, but I have never owned a pair, so I am not going to pretend I can compare them for you. And I would skip buying three pairs at once to save yourself a trip. Buy one, wear it for a month, then decide.

Nine months, one pair, and not one morning where I took them out because my lobes were complaining.

If your lobes are the reason you stopped wearing earrings

316L surgical stainless steel, hinged, sized from 6mm to 14mm. Mine are the 10mm and they have been in my ears almost every day since the first week of February.
